Painting cannot restore a swollen, crumbling, or water-damaged particle-board core. Severely damaged panels should be replaced.
Inspect the frame for loose paint, rust, scratches, failed welds, and damaged fasteners.
Remove flaking coating and surface corrosion using an appropriate abrasive method. The remaining surface should be stable and clean.
Degrease the frame before priming.
Bare steel needs a metal-compatible primer, especially where the desk will be cleaned frequently or used in a humid environment.
Do not leave rust beneath a new paint layer. Corrosion can continue and push the coating away from the surface.
