“How is the raven like a writing desk?” is a version of one of the most famous riddles in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The wording most readers know is “Why is a raven like a writing-desk?”
The Mad Hatter asks Alice the question during the tea-party scene. Alice tries to work out the answer, but the Hatter later admits that he does not know it either. In the original story, the riddle functions as nonsense rather than as a normal puzzle with a hidden solution.
Lewis Carroll originally created the riddle without an answer. Readers continued asking about it, so he later proposed an afterthought involving both a raven and a writing desk producing notes, although not musical notes in the ordinary sense.
That later explanation is clever, but it does not change the role of the scene. The joke is partly that Alice expects the question to work like a fair puzzle, while the Hatter does not follow normal conversational rules.
The two objects seem completely unrelated.
A raven is a living bird associated with feathers, flight, sound, and dark imagery. A writing desk is a piece of furniture associated with paper, ink, reading, and study.

This fits the larger world of Wonderland, where words, rules, size, time, and logic constantly shift.
The riddle remains popular because it gives readers permission to invent their own answer. It is less about solving one fixed problem and more about noticing how language can connect unrelated ideas.
A writing desk would have been familiar to Carroll’s readers as a place for letters, notes, books, and ink. It also offers many opportunities for wordplay.
